The Durham Dales

The Durham Dales offer stunning landscapes of rolling hills, peaceful valleys, and picturesque villages.

The Durham Dales, nestled in the west of County Durham, are one of England’s hidden gems, a breathtaking landscape where time slows down and history, nature, and heritage blend seamlessly. Often described as a quieter alternative to the Yorkshire Dales, this unspoiled region forms part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), offering sweeping moorland views, dramatic river valleys, and charming stone-built villages steeped in centuries of tradition.

A Rich and Rugged History

The history of the Durham Dales stretches back thousands of years. In medieval times, the area was controlled by the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham, who ruled with military and spiritual authority. Remnants of their influence can still be seen in ancient castles, market towns, and centuries-old churches that dot the landscape.

Traditional farming, mining, and lead working shaped both the land and the lives of those who lived here. Visit the Killhope Lead Mining Museum, where you can explore a restored 19th-century lead mine and learn about the industrial heritage that once powered the region.

Market towns like Barnard Castle - home to an impressive Norman fortress and the world-class Bowes Museum - and Stanhope, known as the “capital of Weardale,” reflect the area’s rich cultural past. Raby Castle, one of England’s most complete medieval castles, is also nearby and still home to the Vane family after more than 600 years.

Outdoor Adventures for Everyone

The Durham Dales are a paradise for outdoor lovers. With miles of scenic footpaths, long-distance walking routes, and quiet country lanes, it's ideal for both walkers and cyclists. Take a peaceful stroll along the Weardale Way, hike up to High Force - one of England’s most spectacular waterfalls - or cycle through the heather-clad moors and lush valleys.

Nature enthusiasts can explore the vast expanses of Hamsterley Forest, where trails suit everyone from families to serious mountain bikers. The area is also a haven for wildlife - keep an eye out for red squirrels, curlews, and even roe deer roaming the hillsides.
