There are few settings more idyllic for a country wedding than St Bartholomew Church. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and a warm village community, it’s a truly special place to begin married life.
The Parochial Church Council (PCC) has produced a helpful wedding guide for couples, covering everything from flowers and seating to parking, traditions, and who to contact. The aim is simple — to make your wedding day smooth, joyful, and deeply memorable.
Traditions & Personal Touches
St Bartholomew’s weddings are full of charm and tradition. One much-loved custom is the “tying of the churchyard gate”, when local children tie the gates after the ceremony until the groom “buys” the couple’s way out with coins or sweets. Guests are welcome to celebrate with biodegradable confetti, adding to the joy of the day.
Couples are welcome to use their own florist or to arrange the flowers themselves, making use of the church’s pedestals and pew-end hooks. The PCC and friends of the church are often pleased to offer advice, assistance, and gather greenery when available.
Care and Practicalities
The PCC and volunteers take great pride in the presentation of the church and grounds, ensuring everything looks perfect for your special day. Parking can be arranged nearby, and toilets are available at the village hall. The church bell is rung before and after your ceremony to mark the occasion in true village style.
Staying in Thornley Village
For couples and guests, Binks Cottage is ideally situated within walking distance of the church, perfect for the bridal party or family members. Another charming holiday cottage in the village offers extra space, and we’re happy to check availability for your dates to help make your plans as easy as possible.
